INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING EXTRACTION OR ORAL SURGERY

1What to expect
There may be discomfort or pain, and possibly swelling and bruising of the area which will be worst in the first 24 hours. You may have stitches, which we will tell you about.
 
2What not to do
Please do not:-
a.smoke or drink alcohol for 24 hours
b.take physical exercise for 24 hours
c.rinse your mouth vigorously for 24 hours
d."play" with the wound
e.eat or drink for 3 or 4 hours, except cold water
f.use branded mouthwash - see below
 
3What to do
Please do:-
a.Rest for 24-48 hours
b.Take painkillers and antibiotics as advised
c.After 24 hours start salt mouthwashes three times a day as follows:-
-Put "fairly" hot water in a tumbler with 1 teaspoon of salt
-Take a mouthful and hold it over the wound and keep it there until the heat goes out of it and spit it out.

 Repeat until finished
-This will help healing and ease discomfort; continue for 1 week
d.Brush your teeth after meals but be gentle initially in the area of surgery
 
4Bleeding
There might be some slight bleeding especially initially.
If bleeding occurs apply pressure by biting onto a clean rolled handkerchief (not tissue) for 15 minutes and sit upright.
